YOKKAICHI ENGISH FELLOWSHIPS
(YEF Program)
One of the highlights of the Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association is the Yokkaichi English Fellows (YEF) program. Now entering its 24th year, this very successful program provides an opportunity for Long Beach teachers or Cal State Long Beach graduates to serve for two years as assistant language teachers at the elementary and middle school levels in Yokkaichi. In some cases teachers have stayed for a third year. This is an English immersion program for the students. You will not be required to speak Japanese. However, language skills are important.
This program has helped the Yokkaichi Schools excel in the English competency exams that are required by Japanese students.
This program is open to graduates of Cal State Long Beach and teachers in the Long Beach Unified School District or teachers who live in Long Beach. Generally up to 4 teachers or new graduates will be selected to work at a paid position in the Yokkaichi School System for two years. A total of seven YEF’s are at the school system each year and are replaced on a rotating basis so that the 2nd year YEF’s may assist the new arrivals. Photos from Last Year
